Resigning can sometimes be stressful, but it is generally a positive decision because you have chosen to change jobs for good reasons and have given the move a lot of thought. Here are some useful tips on how to resign:

  • As soon as you have signed your new contract (and not later than three working days before the end of the month) give verbal notice to your line manager or to the personnel department.
  • Hand in your letter of resignation in duplicate and ask for one copy to be signed and returned to you as acknowledgement of receipt.
  • If you do not have the opportunity to hand in your resignation to your manager personally, send in your notice by registered letter.
  • In general, the notice period is six weeks if you have been with the company less than 5 years. Be prepared to help your manager as much as possible during the transition period. Draw up a list of the work you are engaged in, ensure that as much as possible can be finished before you leave, and offer to brief someone else on the stage you have reached.
  • Always leave your employer on good terms. The IT world is very small.
